CreekLink Heritage Trail

The Creek Link Heritage Trail is a proposal by CreekLink, a small group of Creek neighbours, to place story boards at key points along the length of Deptford Creek,  to highlight the Creek’s remarkable 19th century industrial history.  Creek enterprises contributed in a number of ways to London’s successful emergence as the world’s first functioning mega city . The completed Heritage Trail will also provide information about the Creek’s surprisingly rich 21st century environment, and look ahead at the challenges the worsening Climate Emergency poses.   The Heritage Trail will contribute to an improved public realm for the whole Creek. By giving old and new Creekside communities access to a shared heritage, the Heritage Trail will help build a neighbourhood wide sense of identity.

Initial reactions during the first half of 2021 have been positive,  with the idea welcomed by key stakeholders including the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Thames Water, Thames Tideway Tunnel, the Royal (Maritime) Museums Greenwich, the Greenwich Society, the Greenwich Industrial History Society and the Creekside Environment Centre.

With a draft list of the contents and locations of the story boards now ready for discussion,  CreekLink is continuing to develop its proposals.  We will seek to widen our range of contacts,  especially with local Creek organisations and residents, and continue to work up funding proposals.

We will also build the capacity of the organization. We need more people to join us, and help make the Heritage Trail happen. We welcome ideas and comments.
